What counts as a plumbing emergency?
It’s any problem that could cause flooding, serious water damage, loss of water or a safety risk if it isn’t sorted quickly, such as a burst pipe, an uncontrollable leak, an overflowing toilet or water coming through a ceiling. If water is escaping and you can’t stop it, turn off your supply at the stopcock and treat it as urgent.
What should I do first while I wait for a plumber?
Turn off the water at your stopcock, then open the cold taps to drain the system. Keep away from electrics if water is near them, and switch off the electricity at the consumer unit if you’re unsure.
