Blocked Toilet Repairs

A blocked toilet is disruptive and unpleasant, and it needs dealing with properly rather than left to clear itself. We clear the blockage, check why it happened and make sure the toilet flushes and empties as it should.

A blocked toilet has a habit of announcing itself at the worst moment. The usual sign is water that climbs up the pan after a flush and then drains away far too slowly instead of clearing in one go. In a home with a single bathroom that becomes a real problem within hours, and in a flat or a busy workplace it can leave a whole building without a usable loo.

A white toilet of the kind we unblock and repair

There is almost always a reason behind it, and that reason decides how the job is done. Clearing whatever is stuck in the pan might get the water moving, but if the real cause sits further down the soil pipe or the drain, it will block again before long. We clear the blockage, check the pipework beyond it is running freely, and flag anything making repeat blockages likely.

Spotting the problem

How do you know a toilet is blocked?

Early warning signs

  • The water rises higher than usual before it slowly drains away
  • The pan empties sluggishly or needs a second flush to clear
  • Gurgling as the water finally disappears
  • A lingering smell around the toilet that will not shift

Signs it is more serious

  • Water climbing towards the rim with no sign of falling
  • Waste backing up when you run a sink or shower
  • More than one toilet or drain playing up at once
  • Waste or water surfacing at an outside drain or gully

Several appliances backing up together usually points to the shared drain, not the toilet, which is where our emergency drain unblocking comes in.

Why it happens

Why do toilets block in the first place?

Things that should not be flushed

Wet wipes, cotton wool, sanitary products and kitchen roll do not break down like paper, and they cause most blocked pans.

Too much paper at once

A large wad of paper in one flush, especially with a low-flush cistern, can wedge in the trap at the base of the pan.

A flush with no force

A cistern that releases too little water cannot carry waste away cleanly, so a blockage builds up over time.

A build-up in the soil pipe

Waste and scale in the soil pipe can stop the pan emptying even when it looks clear.

A fault out in the drain

Displaced joints, a collapsed section or tree roots in the drain cause blockages that keep returning and need a survey.

An object dropped in

Toys, bottle tops, air fresheners and the odd phone lodge in the trap and will not shift until they are lifted out.

Before we arrive

What to do while you wait

A few quick steps keep a blocked toilet from becoming an overflow in the meantime.

  • Stop flushing. Every flush adds water that has nowhere to go and brings the level closer to the rim.
  • If the bowl is nearly full, lift the cistern lid and hold the float up so it cannot refill.
  • Put old towels around the base in case of spills, and keep children and pets out of the room.
  • Leave chemical drain cleaners out of it, as they rarely work on a toilet and can splash back.
  • If you are happy to, try a flanged plunger with slow, steady pushes rather than hard jabs.

If it is already overflowing

When waste water is coming over the rim, turn off the supply at the isolating valve on the pipe behind the toilet, or shut your stopcock if you cannot find it, and do not flush again. Our guide on what to do if your toilet is overflowing goes step by step, and we cover urgent cases on our overflowing toilet repairs page.

Keep well away from electrics if water reaches sockets or appliances. If you ever smell gas, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

Our repair

How we clear and repair the toilet

1

Work out where it is stuck

We check whether the blockage is in the pan, the soil pipe or the drain, and whether other appliances are affected.

2

Clear it without damage

With the right tool, from a flanged plunger or closet auger to drain rods, we free the blockage without harming the pan.

3

Check why it happened

We test the flush, confirm the pan empties cleanly, and look for anything likely to cause it again.

4

Advise and put it right

If a part has failed or the drain needs work, we explain the options and carry out the repair or a survey.

What does it cost to clear a blocked toilet?

The price depends on where the blockage is and how stubborn it proves. A simple obstruction in the pan is a quick job, while one deep in the soil pipe or the drain takes longer and may need rodding or jetting. We would rather understand the problem than quote a figure that turns out wrong, so email us with your postcode and a few details, or use the form at the top of the page. Our article on what an emergency plumber costs explains how pricing works, and our plumbing services page lists everything we handle.

Frequently asked questions

Blocked toilets, answered

Is a blocked toilet a plumbing emergency?

It depends on the situation. A single blocked toilet in a home with another working loo is usually urgent rather than a crisis. It becomes an emergency when it is the only toilet, when waste water is rising towards the rim or overflowing, or when more than one appliance is backing up at the same time, which can point to a blocked drain. If water is overflowing, stop flushing and contact us for help.

Can I clear a blocked toilet myself?

A mild blockage can sometimes be shifted with a flanged plunger and patience, working the plunger steadily rather than forcing it. Avoid tipping chemical drain cleaners into the pan, as they are often ineffective on toilet blockages and can splash back. If plunging does not work, or the bowl is draining slowly and refilling, it is better to call a plumber before the blockage sets harder or the level rises.

What should I never flush down a toilet?

Only the three Ps belong in a toilet: pee, poo and paper. Wet wipes (including those labelled flushable), cotton wool, cotton buds, sanitary products, nappies, kitchen roll, dental floss and cooking fat should all go in the bin. These items do not break down like toilet paper and are the most common cause of blockages that need a plumber.

Why does my toilet keep blocking?

A toilet that blocks repeatedly usually has an underlying cause rather than bad luck. Common reasons include unsuitable items being flushed, a build-up in the pan trap or soil pipe, a partial blockage further along the drain, or a low-flush cistern that does not clear the pan fully. We check the cause so the fix lasts, rather than simply clearing the surface blockage.
